About statins simple

  • About statins simple

    What are statins?
Statins are medications that lower cholesterol levels and reduce mortality from cardiovascular diseases. They block the enzyme that produces "bad" cholesterol and slow down atherosclerosis.

Who should take them and when?
Doctors prescribe statins based on cardiovascular risk factors such as age, hypertension, diabetes, and smoking. The more risk factors you have, the more important it is to take statins.

Why take statins even if cholesterol levels are normal?

Cholesterol level is not the only indicator of cardiovascular risk. Statins have additional (pleiotropic) effects: they reduce inflammation in blood vessels, stabilize atherosclerotic plaques, improve endothelial function, and lower the risk of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke), even in patients with normal cholesterol levels.

    Can dietary changes replace medications?
Only 20% of cholesterol comes from food; the rest is produced by the body. Genetics affect cholesterol levels more than diet. Healthy eating is important but cannot replace statins when treating serious conditions.

Can statins be taken in courses?
No, once you stop taking statins, cholesterol levels return to previous values, and the risks increase again.

    Are all statins the same?
No, not all statins are the same, even though they have a similar mechanism of action. Since the first statins appeared in the 1970s, the drugs have been continually improved. Each has its own characteristics and spectrum of action. A doctor will determine which specific drug is best suited for the patient.

    Do statins have side effects?

Yes, like all medications, statins can have side effects. The most common are elevated liver enzymes and muscle symptoms (pain, weakness). However, these are rare (less than 1% of patients) and usually mild. In most cases, the benefits of statins greatly outweigh the potential risks. If side effects occur, a doctor may adjust the dosage or prescribe another medication.

The main thing — do not stop taking statins without consulting your doctor. Your doctor will help you make the right decision based on test results and medical recommendations.
