Darnytsia Changes English Transliteration: from Darnitsa to Darnytsia

Following the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the pharmaceutical company Darnytsia made the decision to change the English transliteration of its name — from Darnitsa to Darnytsia, in accordance with the official Ukrainian transliteration rules and in recognition of national identity.

Why was the name "Darnitsa" used before?

The name Darnitsa had been used since Soviet and post-Soviet times — it was a common transliteration practice for many years. However, it did not comply with the current standards for transliterating Ukrainian words into Latin script, as defined by Resolution No. 55 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated January 27, 2010. According to these standards, the correct spelling is Darnytsia.

Why was the change made now?

After February 24, 2022, the company undertook a comprehensive update of its external positioning, including its name and visual identity. The switch to Darnytsia became part of a broader initiative to Ukrainianize the company in the public space and to demonstrate support for national unity.

This step is also part of the brand campaign "Darnytsia is Ours. Let’s Preserve What Makes Us Who We Are", through which the company emphasizes its Ukrainian roots and heritage. Darnytsia, which has been supporting Ukrainians for nearly a century, remains an integral part of the nation's history. The campaign is meant to remind people that language, culture, traditions, and domestic producers are not just formalities, but fundamental elements of resilience and self-identity.

Darnytsia is the correct transliteration of the Ukrainian word «Дарниця» under the current standard approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (Resolution No. 55 from 2010). This transliteration is officially recognized and accurately reflects the Ukrainian name in Latin script.

Why is the spelling "Darnitsa" still sometimes seen?

We have already implemented the new transliteration across corporate channels, international communications, and on new product packaging. However, in some cases, consumers may still encounter the previous Darnitsa spelling, particularly in existing medication instructions.

This is due to several objective factors:

  • Any changes to medication instructions must be approved by the national regulator.
  • Old printed materials must be utilized, and product recalls conducted, which is a complex and costly process.
  • These costs could directly affect the final price of medicines.

As a result, the company made a considered decision: to gradually change the transliteration in already registered products and to implement the Darnytsia spelling in all new developments and when regulatory updates are made.

We sincerely thank our consumers and partners for their understanding and support during this transition. The move to Darnytsia is an important part of our identity and a reflection of the values that unite Ukrainian society.
