How to Measure Blood Pressure Correctly — Tips from Darnytsia
Measuring your blood pressure on time is a simple yet extremely important step in maintaining heart and vascular health. Darnytsia Pharmaceutical Company, together with medical experts, reminds you: regular blood pressure monitoring helps you avoid hidden risks and seek medical attention in time.
How should you measure blood pressure correctly?
• Take your blood pressure at rest, no earlier than 10–15 minutes after physical activity, emotional stress, or eating.
• Sit upright with your back supported by the chair, and do not cross your legs.
• Place the cuff of the tonometer at heart level, on the bare arm, without clothing.
• Do not talk or move during the measurement.
• For accuracy, take 2–3 measurements with intervals of 1–2 minutes and use the average result.
What is considered normal blood pressure?
When your blood pressure is measured in a doctor’s office:
• For adults, a pressure of <120/70 mm Hg is considered normal.
• High-normal ranges are 120–139/70–89 mm Hg.
• If your readings consistently show a systolic value of ≥140 mm Hg and/or a diastolic value of ≥90 mm Hg, this may indicate hypertension and requires a doctor’s consultation.
Which blood pressure monitors are better: mechanical or electronic?
• Electronic (automatic) monitors are preferred for home use: they are easy to use, provide fast results, and require no special training.
• Traditional mechanical monitors (with a stethoscope) are considered more accurate but are recommended for healthcare professionals as they require skill and good hearing.
The choice is yours, but most importantly: use certified equipment and regularly check its accuracy and convenience for daily use.
Why does it matter?
Regular blood pressure monitoring is key to early detection of hypertension, stroke risk, or heart attack. This is especially important for people over 40 or those with a family history of cardiovascular diseases.
“Many people perceive blood pressure as something secondary, measuring it only when feeling unwell. I always emphasize that blood pressure is a silent indicator of your heart and vascular health. Regular monitoring not only helps to timely detect deviations but also prevents serious complications, preserving health and quality of life. Measure your pressure correctly — it’s a simple yet effective way to take care of yourself and your loved ones,” says Tetiana Danilevych, cardiologist and medical advisor at Darnytsia Pharmaceutical Company.
